A Unexpected Passion
Casey Alexander arrived at Kansas State University this season with a résumé that reads more like a basketball itinerary than a baseball scouting report. After stints as a player at Belmont and coaching positions at Stetson, Lipscomb and his alma mater, Alexander has built a reputation as a sharp strategist on the hardwood.
But behind the clipboard and the playbook lies a different obsession. Alexander has confessed that baseball, not basketball, is his favorite sport, a revelation that surprised even his players and colleagues.
The Caray Connection
The seed of his fandom was planted early, when the distinctive voice of Harry Caray echoed through his childhood living room. The Chicago Cubs broadcaster’s exuberant calls and sing‑along anthems turned a casual listener into a devoted fan, prompting Alexander to attend games at Wrigley Field and to schedule his weekends around televised Cubs matchups.
His allegiance extends beyond the North Side of Chicago; Alexander is also a vocal supporter of the Kansas City Royals, the hometown team that shares his Midwestern roots. He was once given the chance to deliver the ceremonial first pitch before a Kansas State‑Arizona State showdown, only to miss the mark, an experience that only deepened his resolve to get it right.
Now, with K‑State Day scheduled for July 17, Alexander hopes to finally succeed at Kaufman Stadium, the Royals’ home, where he plans to showcase the same poise he displays on the basketball court. Whether on the court or the diamond, his dual passions illustrate a coach whose identity is as much defined by the crack of a bat as by the bounce of a ball.
