The University of Kansas (KU) has earned a landmark distinction: it will serve as a regional host for the NCAA baseball tournament for the first time in its history. The selection comes after the Jayhawks captured both the Big 12 regular‑season title and the conference tournament championship, cementing their dominance in the league.
Preparing the Ballpark for a Bigger Crowd
To welcome a larger audience, KU plans to remove the left‑field wall at Hoglund Ballpark and install additional seating on the third‑base side. Athletic director Travis Goff emphasized that the venue is being "jammed with fans," reflecting the excitement surrounding the event.
Head coach Dan Fitzgerald outlined the team's ambitions, stating that the Jayhawks are eager to win their first NCAA Tournament game since May 30, 2014, and to advance past the regional round for the first time since 1993. The program last appeared in the College World Series in 1993, where it was eliminated after two games.
Tournament Structure and the Road Forward
The NCAA tournament features 16 four‑team, double‑elimination regionals. Winners move on to best‑of‑three super regional series, and the super regional champions head to the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. Unlike previous years, the NCAA did not disclose the seeding order for the 16 teams, leaving KU uncertain about which three opponents will arrive at Hoglund Ballpark until the selection show at 11 a.m. on Monday.
If KU advances, it will join a lineage of teams that have pursued the ultimate prize in college baseball. The Jayhawks' historic run would not only be a personal triumph but also a milestone for the Big 12 Conference, which is represented by NCAA and Big 12 Conference as organizing bodies.
