Mountaineers Earn Historic Hosting Role
West Virginia University's baseball program captured national attention this week by securing an at-large bid to host an NCAA regional tournament, a distinction not seen since the 2019 season. The Mountaineers finished the regular season with a 39-14 record, underscoring their dominance in the Big 12 Conference where they posted a 21-9 mark.
The selection underscores the team's consistency, marking the 17th NCAA Tournament appearance in program history and the fourth consecutive year the Mountaineers have earned a berth. Head coach Steve Sabins, now in his second season, guided the squad to a remarkable turnaround that has reignited excitement among fans and alumni.
A Competitive Field of Host Sites
WVU will be joined by a slate of established programs across the country, including traditional powerhouses such as UCLA, Georgia, Auburn, Texas, North Carolina, Texas A&M, Oregon, Florida, Southern Mississippi, Nebraska, Mississippi State, Florida State and Alabama. Notably, Kansas Jayhawks will also host a regional, making them the only other Big 12 institution alongside West Virginia to do so.
The complete bracket will be revealed during a live selection show on Monday at noon, where the remaining participants and matchups will be announced. Last season, the Mountaineers advanced to the Clemson Regional and faced LSU in a Super Regional, a run that culminated in LSU capturing the national championship.
