Southern Miss captured its third Sun Belt Baseball Championship in four seasons, completing a sweep of Troy and Louisiana to secure an automatic NCAA Baseball Regional hosting slot in Hattiesburg, Mississippi.
The championship series unfolded as a showcase of power and poise, with Joey Urban launching a 402‑foot, three‑run homer in the decisive game against Troy and Seth Smith delivering a 425‑foot leadoff blast in the final against Louisiana.
Davis Gillespie added a two‑run blast against Troy and a clutch double in the Louisiana finale, while reliever Colby Allen stifled the opposition with six strikeouts over six innings in relief.
A Pitcher’s Night to Remember
Beyond the bats, the Golden Eagles’ arms proved decisive. Sean Darnell and Matthew Russo combined for late‑inning shutout work, while Allen’s six‑out‑of‑six performance turned a tight contest into a comfortable victory.
The crowd in Hattiesburg erupted as the team scored in each of its first five at‑bats against Louisiana, building an early lead that never slipped away.
What the Title Means for the Program
The championship marks the culmination of a rapid rise for Southern Miss, a program that has become a fixture in the upper echelon of Sun Belt baseball. With the automatic Regional hosting rights, the Golden Eagles will now welcome a field of national contenders to their home diamond.
Coach Sean Darnell, who guided the team through a grueling schedule, praised the depth of his roster. “This group believes in each other,” he said, noting contributions from a host of players including Ben Higdon, Kyle Morrison, Lee Amedee, Mark Collins, Teague Broadhead, Thomas Crabtree and Donovan LaSalle.
The NCAA will announce the Regional bracket in the coming weeks, but one thing is certain: Southern Miss will enter the tournament as a top seed, riding the momentum of a championship that has already cemented its place in recent Sun Belt lore.
