UNC Baseball Stars Shine at ACC Tournament Despite Championship Loss

Jake Schaffner, Owen Hull, and Rom Kellis V earn All‑Tournament honors as Tar Heels look ahead to NCAA play

The University of North Carolina’s baseball team fell short in the ACC Championship game, dropping a 13‑6 decision to Georgia Tech on Tuesday night. Despite the loss, the Tar Heels’ offensive firepower was on full display, setting the stage for a promising run in the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Three standout Tar Heels earned All‑Tournament recognition for their contributions at the event. Junior infielder Jake Schaffner, senior outfielder Owen Hull, and freshman pitcher Rom Kellis V were each selected to the All‑Tournament team, underscoring their impact on the lineup.

Schaffner led the offense with a .500 batting average over the weekend, notching six hits, three walks, four runs and four RBIs. Hull close behind, compiled six hits, eight RBIs and three runs across three games, while Kellis V added four hits, seven RBIs and two runs, showcasing a potent bat that helped keep UNC competitive.

The pitching staff, however, struggled to contain the Yellow Jackets’ lineup, surrendering 13 runs on a flurry of hits and walks. Manager Mike Fox acknowledged the need for improvement on the mound as the team transitions to the national stage.

Looking ahead

Coach Mike Fox remains optimistic that the offensive rhythm established in the ACC Tournament will carry forward. “Our bats are hot, and that’s a good sign,” he said, noting that the experience gained in Charlotte will be invaluable as the Tar Heels prepare for the NCAA regionals.
