A community in mourning
A 17‑year‑old college football prospect, Deontavis Cooper, was killed early Saturday night in a single‑vehicle crash that occurred in Leon County, Florida. The sedan he was riding in left the roadway, struck a culvert and collided with a telephone pole, ejecting the teenager from the back seat. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Two other occupants, both 18‑year‑olds, survived the impact but were left in critical condition, authorities said. Emergency responders arrived shortly before 11 p.m. and found the vehicle twisted around a utility pole, its front end crushed.
A coach’s heartfelt remembrance
Coach Justin Rogers, who had guided Cooper at Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Georgia, described the young lineman as someone who could light up a room with his smile. “He was loved by many, and his kindness was as big as his talent on the field,” Rogers said.
Remembered for More Than Football
Cooper had committed to Tulane University in December, securing a spot on the Green Wave’s roster for the upcoming season. He had also drawn interest from several other programs, including South Alabama, Cincinnati, UCF, Arkansas State and East Carolina.
Tulane football released a statement mourning the loss of “a dedicated student‑athlete whose resilience and positive outlook inspired teammates and coaches alike.” The university highlighted Cooper’s “genuine spirit” and the joy he brought to the campus community.
The tragedy has reverberated beyond the gridiron, prompting an outpouring of grief from peers, alumni and local residents. Vigils are being organized in Cooper’s memory, and his story serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life, even for those who seem destined for bright futures.
