Washington State Secures 2026 Mountain West Title
Washington State erupted in celebration on Saturday night as the Cougars captured the 2026 Mountain West Conference Tournament championship, defeating San Diego State 14-4 in a dominant display that marked the program’s first conference crown since the 1995 Pac‑10 North title.
The victory was more than a trophy; it was a statement. After dropping the first game of the day 9-2, the Cougars forced a winner‑take‑all showdown and answered with a seven‑run seventh inning that turned a 4‑3 deficit into a comfortable lead.
At the heart of the comeback was senior slugger Max Hartman, who delivered a three‑run homer and finished with four RBIs, three runs scored and a .333 day at the plate.
The offensive onslaught was spread across the lineup. Trevor Smith drove in three runs, Gavin Roy scored three times and extended his on‑base streak to 43 games, while Dustin Robinson doubled twice and added two RBIs. Ryan Skjonsby also contributed three RBIs, rounding out a balanced attack.
On the mound, reliever Scott Rienguette shut down the Aztecs over 3.2 innings, striking out six batters and preserving the lead with a 3.2 scoreless outing.
The performance also rewrote several school records. Gavin Roy broke the single‑season mark for hit‑by‑pitch with 109, while Matt Priest’s 16‑game hitting streak and Trevor Smith’s 15‑game on‑base streak joined the list of historic achievements.
Awaiting the NCAA Selection
With the championship secured, Washington State now awaits its NCAA Tournament destination, which will be announced Monday morning at 9 a.m. on ESPN, a moment that could extend the Cougars’ season into the national stage.
