The Colorado Avalanche entered Game 3 of the Western Conference Final with a chance to swing the series, but the Vegas Golden Knights answered with a decisive 5‑3 win that erased a three‑goal lead.
A Dominant First Period Fades
Colorado struck first, lighting the lamp three times in the opening period while outshooting Vegas 17‑7, with Gabe Landeskog, Nazem Kadri and Jack Drury each finding the net.
The Golden Knights, however, turned the tide in the second frame, scoring three unanswered goals to knot the game at 3‑3. Mark Stone opened the period just 19 seconds in, and William Karlsson and Keegan Kolesar added their names before the period ended.
Vegas completed the comeback in the third, when Tomas Hertl delivered the game‑winner, sealing a 5‑3 final score and handing the Avalanche a 3‑0 series deficit.
The victory came at a steep price for Colorado, as Nathan MacKinnon blocked a shot that struck the side of his knee and limped off the ice, while Valeri Nushkin failed to return for the final 22 minutes of play.
Goalie Scott Wedgewood was pulled after allowing three goals on eight shots in the second period, finishing with 18 saves, while Carter Hart turned aside 32 shots for Vegas, including all 19 he faced after the first period.
Coach John Tortorella acknowledged the team’s mismanagement of breakouts and failure to match the Knights’ intensity, noting that the Avalanche’s power play went 0‑for‑1 in the first period and that their early dominance could not be sustained.
