Repeat DWI Offender Receives 12-Year Sentence in Brazos County

Jose Luis Diaz’s extensive record of intoxicated driving and violent behavior underscores a public safety concern

Jose Luis Diaz, a 36-year-old resident of Bryan, Texas, was sentenced this week to twelve years in prison after a jury found him guilty of his thirteenth driving while intoxicated offense in Brazos County District Court.

The conviction followed a May 2024 traffic stop in which officers observed Diaz speeding and failing to signal a turn. A subsequent test revealed a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12, nearly one and a half times the state’s legal limit.

Prosecutors highlighted Diaz’s lengthy criminal history, noting prior felony and misdemeanor convictions dating back to 2006, including a 2014 sentence of ten years for possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver, as well as multiple collisions involving property damage.

A Dangerous Pattern Emerges

The pattern intensified earlier this year when, while awaiting trial on a felony DWI charge, Diaz assaulted another inmate in the county jail, underscoring the risk he poses beyond the road. Two additional trials are pending for driving with an invalid license, scheduled for 2024 and 2025.

The Brazos County District Attorney’s office issued a statement emphasizing that repeat offenses of this nature present a serious threat to the community and that the office will continue to pursue stringent penalties for offenders who endanger public safety.
