The George and Dragon Pub, a fixture in Seattle's Fremont neighborhood for more than three decades, has become a staple for soccer fans, frequently appearing on "best bars to watch soccer" lists and earning official designation as a Sounders FC viewing site during the MLS Cup Playoffs.
In early May the pub's liquor license expired, forcing owner Daniel Pagard to halt alcohol service after he missed a renewal email from the Washington State Liquor and Cannabis Board, a setback that temporarily dimmed the bar's usual buzz.
A Race Against the World Cup Calendar
Pagard is now working to reinstate the permit before Seattle hosts World Cup matches beginning June 15, aiming to have drinks back on the menu in time for the UEFA Champions League final on May 30 and to provide an enhanced viewing experience with extra speakers and staff for the global tournament.
The pub's menu, known for classic British fare such as cottage pie, baked beans and bangers and mash, continues to attract patrons, and the owner hopes the renewed license will allow him to serve those dishes alongside chilled ale during the high‑profile games.
City officials and the Washington State Department of Revenue are supporting the renewal process, while the pub's historic ties to both Seattle and its British roots underscore the cultural blend that has made it a beloved gathering place for diverse fans.
