A Hall of Fame Celebration
The University of Florida recently announced the 2026 Athletics Hall of Fame class, welcoming two of its most prolific scorers, Vernon Maxwell and Andrew Moten. Maxwell, the all‑time leading scorer with 2,450 points, and Moten, fourth on the career list with 1,930 points, were celebrated for the indelible marks they left on Gators basketball.
Their contributions helped usher in a new era for the program. Maxwell’s leadership was pivotal during the team’s first NCAA tournament appearance in 1987, a milestone that paved the way for future successes. Both players embodied the competitive spirit that has defined Florida basketball for decades.
Head coach Todd Golden personally conveyed the honor to the two legends, praising their on‑court excellence and off‑court influence. Golden highlighted how Maxwell’s leadership and Moten’s scoring ability helped shape the culture of winning that still resonates within the locker room.
Beyond college, Maxwell added two NBA championships to his résumé with the Houston Rockets, while Moten’s professional journey began when he was drafted by the New Jersey Nets. Their post‑collegiate achievements underscore the lasting impact of their Florida careers on the broader basketball landscape.
The Gators’ legacy also includes a historic national championship in 2006 under coach Billy Donovan, a triumph that built upon the foundation laid by earlier stars. Donovan’s tenure cemented Florida’s reputation as a powerhouse, setting the stage for the current era of success.
Coach Todd Golden is currently making his own mark as the fastest coach in program history to reach 100 wins, accomplishing the feat in just 139 games. His rapid ascent reflects both the strong legacy of past coaches and the bright future ahead for the Gators.
