A Rising Star Cut Down
The college football world was stunned this weekend when Deontavis Cooper, a 17‑year‑old offensive lineman slated to join Tulane University’s Green Wave, was killed in a single‑vehicle crash on a Florida highway early Saturday morning.
According to the Tulane athletics department, the accident occurred around 11 p.m. near a culvert and a telephone pole, after the sedan Cooper was riding in veered off the road. He was seated in the back and was ejected from the vehicle, where he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A Promising Future
Cooper, a graduate of Thomas County Central High School in Thomasville, Georgia, had signed with Tulane in June 2025 after an official visit to New Orleans and had been widely regarded as a consensus three‑star prospect, having also weighed offers from South Alabama, Cincinnati, UCF, Arkansas State and East Carolina.
Words From Tulane And His Coach
Tulane’s head coach and athletic staff issued a heartfelt statement, describing Cooper as a young man whose dedication, resilience and positive outlook had already left an indelible mark on the program. “His spirit, kindness and the joy he brought to those around him will be remembered forever,” the release read.
Justin Rogers, Cooper’s high school coach, took to social media to share a personal tribute, recalling the teenager’s work ethic and the way he lifted teammates both on and off the field. “He was more than a player; he was a brother to many of us,” Rogers wrote.
The tragedy has sparked an outpouring of grief across the university and the broader football community, with fans and alumni reflecting on the promise of a career that was just beginning. As investigations continue, the incident underscores the fragile nature of life and the deep connections forged through sport.
