A Hall of Fame Induction

The Pennsylvania Scholastic Football Coaches Association honored Terry Smith on May 24, welcoming him into its prestigious Hall of Fame. The ceremony recognized not only his coaching successes but also the indelible mark he has left on the football community across Pennsylvania.

Over a ten‑year tenure at Gateway High School in Monroeville, Smith compiled a stellar 101‑30 record, guiding the Gators to multiple playoff appearances and establishing a culture of excellence that produced more than 70 scholarship athletes.

Before his coaching career, Smith excelled as a player at Gateway, leading the team to WPIAL championships in 1985 and 1986. His dual experience as a standout athlete and a strategic coach gave him a unique perspective that resonated with players and peers alike.

The 2026 induction class also featured Mark Evans and Mike Lippy, forming a trio of figures whose contributions have shaped the state’s football landscape. In his acceptance speech, Smith expressed heartfelt gratitude to the game itself, to Gateway, and to Penn State for the opportunities that helped him realize his dream.

Reflecting on his journey, Smith noted that football has given him far more than he could ever repay, underscoring a deep sense of stewardship toward the sport and the communities it serves.
