On April 18, a 15‑year‑old bicyclist was killed in Durham, North Carolina, after being struck by a vehicle driven by Joseph Batista Savarino, a grandson of Hall‑of‑Fame coach Mike Krzyzewski. Police say Savarino was intoxicated at the time, with a breathalyzer reading of 0.11, and admitted to having consumed alcohol before getting behind the wheel.
A fatal night on the road
Prosecutors quickly added felony death by vehicle and involuntary manslaughter to the initial DWI charge on May 21, underscoring the severity of the crash. Although a warrant for Savarino’s arrest was obtained the following day, it was recalled shortly thereafter, allowing him to be released after less than 48 hours in custody. His driver’s license was suspended for at least 30 days.
The case has drawn attention to the Savarino family’s connection to Duke University. Joseph’s younger brother, Michael Savarino, was previously charged with DWI while playing for the Blue Devils in 2021, adding a layer of complexity to the family’s public profile.
A legacy shadowed by scandal
The incident casts a somber light on the legacy of Mike Krzyzewski, who retired in 2022 after amassing 1,202 career wins, 15 ACC tournament titles and five national championships. While his contributions to college basketball remain monumental, the recent legal troubles of his grandson have introduced an unexpected and troubling chapter to his story.
