Sue Nelson has been the organist for the Minnesota Twins for more than two decades, her notes weaving through the rhythm of every home game at Target Field.
Born and raised in the modest town of Nicollet, Minnesota, Nelson’s earliest memories are tied to the hymns of Trinity Lutheran and the lively chatter of supper clubs that dotted the southern part of the state.
An Accidental Beginning
Her professional journey started almost by chance in 1981, when a last‑minute nervous breakdown left a slot open in the North Stars’ musical lineup. Nelson stepped in, and the experience sparked a lifelong love for stadium music.
Two years later, after honing her craft at Stewart Organ Studio in Mankato and performing across venues like the Tropicana in New Ulm, she was invited to join the Minnesota Twins. Since 1999, her short, spirited motifs have become a signature part of the game‑day experience.
Connecting Through Keys
Beyond the organ, Nelson is known for her genuine interactions with fans. She often pauses to teach a budding pianist, share stories about the power of music, and invite the crowd to feel the pulse of each melody she plays.
Her presence has turned the organ loft into a gathering place where generations meet, where a simple tune can spark a memory, and where the love of music transcends the scoreboard.
As the Twins continue to chase excellence on the field, Nelson’s music remains a constant, a reminder that behind every roar of the crowd is a melody that binds the community together.
