A tournament of mixed results
On May 23 the Onekama baseball team traveled to the Pit Spitter Tournament, where they faced Gaylord St. Mary and Ellsworth in back‑to‑back games. The first contest ended in a 6‑3 loss, but the Portagers rebounded with a 10‑0 victory over Ellsworth, improving their season record to 10‑12.
Andrew Hybza and Jason Sedelmaier each drove in a run for Onekama in the defeat, while Camden Ickes turned in a solid outing on the mound, pitching four innings, allowing two earned runs on eight hits and striking out six batters. Jake Brown followed with 3 2/3 scoreless innings, surrendering only two hits while recording seven strikeouts. Mitchell Falk closed out the game with 1 1/3 innings of shutout baseball, adding two more strikeouts.
Key contributors step up
The offensive spark came from Brandon Brindle and Bennett Zeller, who each collected two hits and two RBIs in the win over Ellsworth. Their performances helped the team build an early lead that the pitching staff protected throughout the game. Garrett Desarmeaux and Grady Desarmeaux also saw action, contributing to a balanced lineup that showed depth across the roster.
Camden Ickes' four‑inning effort was highlighted by six strikeouts, underscoring his role as a reliable starter. Andrew Hybza added a scoreless inning of his own, throwing a single hit while fanning one batter. These outings illustrated a pitching staff that can rely on multiple arms in high‑pressure moments.
Looking ahead to the district stage
The Portagers are scheduled to meet Brethren in a pre‑district game at 4:15 p.m. on May 26. A win would set up a noon showdown with Frankfort on May 30 for the District 106 semifinal. Both upcoming contests carry significant implications for the team's postseason hopes, and the coaching staff is already preparing the club for the next round of competition.
With a roster that blends experienced contributors like Andrew Hybza, Jake Brown and Camden Ickes with emerging talents such as Brandon Brindle and Bennett Zeller, Onekama aims to translate its tournament lessons into deeper playoff runs. The team's home field in Onekama, Michigan, will once again host the next battle, offering fans a chance to rally behind the Portagers as they chase a district title.
