The Transfer Landscape
As the final out of the 2026 season slipped away, the LSU Tigers baseball program turned its focus toward the future, beginning the meticulous work of assembling a roster that could compete in 2037.
Coach Jay Johnson and his staff have been combing through the transfer portal, evaluating which current players will remain and which will seek new opportunities, a process that has already surfaced several promising names.
Among those who have entered the portal is Trey Hawsey, a Louisiana native from West Monroe whose collegiate bat has drawn considerable buzz.
In his most recent season, Hawsey posted a .335 average, hit 15 home runs, added 12 doubles, and maintained a career on‑base percentage of .423, numbers that align closely with Johnson’s offensive philosophy.
He also slugged .513 as a freshman in 2025 and drew 31 walks, underscoring his ability to get on base — a trait that fits the Tigers’ strategic goals.
Although Hawsey primarily plays first base, the Tigers’ most pressing need appears to be outfield depth, a factor that could influence whether the coaching staff pursues him for a different role or seeks another fit.
The staff is also reviewing the eligibility of Derek Curiel, Steven Milam and Jake Brown, each of whom brings a different set of skills to the mix.
Meanwhile, true freshman Mason Braun has already emerged as a reliable first baseman, giving the program a solid option at that position as they evaluate their roster moves.
