Central College announced this week that Helen Staley has been appointed to the role of varsity assistant coach for the women’s basketball program, bringing a blend of playing experience and coaching acumen to the staff.
Staley’s basketball journey began at Upper Iowa University, where she honed her skills before moving on to Division I Oakland University, compiling a college career that saw her appear in 56 games with 42 starts, scoring 337 points and pulling down 194 rebounds.
Her coaching trajectory continued at NAIA member Dakota Wesleyan University, serving as a graduate assistant during a season in which the Tigers posted a 29‑7 record and advanced to the NAIA semifinals before falling in the final.
A Coaching Journey Defined by Growth
Beyond the day‑to‑day duties, Staley also took part in the 22nd edition of the “So You Want To Be A Coach” program hosted by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association, a platform designed to develop the next generation of mentors in the sport.
Central College’s women’s basketball team concluded the previous season sixth in the American Rivers Conference, a positioning that the athletic department hopes will be bolstered by Staley’s fresh perspective and tactical insight.
The appointment underscores Central College’s commitment to elevating its program through experienced personnel, and Staley’s diverse background is expected to contribute significantly to the team’s development in the upcoming campaign.
