The English Football League has announced the exact dates for the 2026 summer transfer window and the 2027 winter window, giving clubs a clear timeframe for player movements.
Transfer Window Calendar
The summer window will open on 15 June 2026 and close on 1 September 2026, while the winter window begins on 1 January 2027 and ends on 1 February 2027. These periods will shape the squad building strategies for all Championship clubs.
Wrexham finished seventh in the Championship table, just two points behind the playoff winners Hull City, and the club is already planning how to close the gap in the next season.
Squad Registration Requirements
Each Championship side must submit a squad of no more than 25 players over the age of 21, with at least eight homegrown players and two goalkeepers meeting the league’s criteria.
A homegrown player is defined as someone who has been registered with an English or Welsh club for three consecutive seasons before turning 21. This rule encourages development within the UK.
Wrexham will be allowed to field any number of players during the first month of the campaign before the official squad list is submitted, giving the manager flexibility in the early fixtures.
Three clubs relegated from the Premier League will receive parachute payments, which are expected to increase the financial competition among Championship teams.
Playoffs and Season Kick‑off
The Championship postseason will expand from four to six clubs for the 2026‑27 season, offering more teams a chance at promotion. The new campaign is slated to begin with the Carabao Cup fixtures between 7 and 9 August, followed by league matches on 14 and 16 August.
Manager Phil Parkinson acknowledged that Wrexham must improve its squad depth and overall quality to mount a serious promotion challenge in the upcoming season.
