Nebraska Coach Fred Hoiberg unveiled a new addition to his basketball staff on Tuesday, naming Michael Chatman as the program’s Director of Strength and Conditioning.
A Strategic Addition for Nebraska Basketball
Chatman arrives after a distinguished tenure that spans more than fifteen years at the Division I level, where he has overseen performance programs for teams in the Big Ten, SEC and Pac‑12 conferences. His work has helped ten former players earn NBA contracts, including five first‑round selections.
Prior to joining the Huskers, Chatman served two seasons as the head men’s basketball strength and conditioning coach at Louisiana State University, where he designed and implemented comprehensive performance protocols in collaboration with nutritionists and athletic trainers. Before LSU, he spent five years at Stanford as the Sports Performance Coach for both men’s basketball and men’s golf, and earlier in his career held positions at Southeastern Louisiana, Southern, Penn State, Texas and Michigan.
Chatman’s professional footprint also includes a stint as Director of Basketball Performance at Southern Mississippi in 2016 and a three‑year term as Assistant Athletic Director of Strength and Conditioning at Towson University from 2017 to 2019. He remains an active member of the National Strength and Conditioning Association and holds multiple certifications in sports science.
He succeeds Kurt Joseph, who recently transitioned to the NBA’s New Orleans Pelicans as Director of Strength & Conditioning, marking a fresh chapter for Nebraska’s athletic performance strategy.
