Salem High School announced Adam Rutledge as its new boys basketball coach, filling the vacancy left by longtime mentor Kevin Garst, who is stepping away after nearly two decades at the helm.
A Legacy of Excellence
Garst’s career was marked by two state titles, the first in 1994 when the Spartans captured the Division 4 crown and a second in 2013 when the team secured the Division 4 championship again. His influence extended beyond the court, shaping the program’s culture and producing numerous college‑level athletes.
Rutledge arrives with a deep personal connection to the program. He was a starter on the 1999 title team that defeated Gate City at the Norfolk Scope and has spent the past three years leading the Andrew Lewis Middle School squad, compiling a 44‑4 record that included an undefeated 16‑0 season this past winter.
Looking Ahead
Expressing both honor and humility, Rutledge said he is grateful for the opportunity to lead a varsity program that finished the previous season with 19 wins and a regional quarterfinal appearance. He succeeds Garst, who will continue to teach in the business department at Salem High School.
