Fernando Jones has been named the next head coach of the Nantucket Whalers football team, a decision that reflects his long‑standing commitment to the island’s student‑athletes and his proven track record in youth development.
In his current role as Director of Operations for the Nantucket Boys & Girls Club, Jones oversees programming for more than 1,300 young members, manages staff development, budgets facility operations, and designs seasonal activities that keep the community engaged year‑round.
Jones previously served as head coach of the Cyrus Peirce Middle School football program from 2022 through 2024, where he emphasized player development, participation, and a positive team culture. He also worked as an assistant varsity coach at Nantucket High School, focusing on running backs and defensive backs.
A Coach Rooted in the Island
Beyond the sidelines, Jones brings a military background that includes service as a First Lieutenant and Platoon Leader in the Massachusetts Army National Guard. In that capacity he managed training initiatives, equipment operations, and resiliency programs for over 100 soldiers, honing skills that translate directly to leadership on the football field.
Nantucket Public Schools officials say Jones’ blend of coaching experience, community involvement, and strategic leadership makes him an outstanding fit to lead the next chapter of Whaler football.
