A Strategic Addition
The University of Tennessee at Martin announced the signing of Ousseynou Sambe, a 6‑10 forward from Dakar, Senegal, to its men’s basketball class for the 2026‑27 season. The announcement was made on May 26, 2026, and highlights the program’s continued focus on attracting talent that can compete on the international stage.
Sambe’s résumé reads like a global journey. Standing 6‑10 and weighing 205 pounds, he brings a blend of size, athleticism and skill that caught the eye of scouts during the 2024 FIBA U18 AfroBasket tournament, where Senegal secured a bronze medal.
During that competition Sambe averaged 9.2 points, 7.2 rebounds, 2.7 blocks and 1.2 steals, and his finest performance came against Côte d’Ivoire, where he poured in 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. The tournament also served as a platform for him to showcase his defensive instincts and versatility.
Beyond the national team, Sambe has tested himself against senior competition in the Basketball Africa League, suiting up for APR Basketball Club Kigali and Stade Malien. He also spent a brief stint with Vevey Riviera Basket in Switzerland’s LNA league during the 2022‑23 season and participated in the 2025 NBA Academy Games, leading his side with 20 points.
The Skyhawks will welcome Sambe into a roster that already features a blend of domestic standouts and international imports recruited through partners such as Anthem Preparatory School. The 2023‑24 campaign saw the team finish with a school‑record 22 victories, a benchmark that the new class hopes to surpass.
Looking Ahead
Coach Jeremy Shulman and associate head coach Marty Haws see Sambe as a piece that can immediately impact both ends of the floor. They anticipate that his shot‑blocking ability and capacity to stretch the floor will complement the existing backcourt and wing players, positioning the program for another strong season.
