Macalester College’s baseball program celebrated a milestone as outfielders Raymond McCaskey and John McMurray earned spots on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region IX second team, a testament to their dominant performances this spring.
Record‑Breaking Seasons
McCaskey, a senior, posted a .387 batting average across 47 games, amassing 63 hits, 60 runs, 12 doubles, four triples, four home runs and 35 RBIs while stealing 21 bases. His 63 hits broke the school’s single‑season record for games played, and his grand slam in a 14‑run sixth inning against St. Olaf on March 28 underscored his clutch ability. McMurray, a first‑year player, led the team with a .391 average, 68 hits, 52 RBIs and 15 stolen bases, setting new school marks for hits, RBIs and at‑bats (174). He also posted a .467 average in the MIAC Playoffs, highlighted by a three‑run homer that sparked a 14‑5 victory over Luther, the program’s first NCAA Tournament win.
Playoff Triumph and NCAA Debut
The Scots captured their second MIAC Playoff title, finishing the season 30‑17 and securing the program’s inaugural 30‑win campaign. Both McCaskey and McMurray contributed to a 14‑run sixth inning against St. Olaf and a 14‑5 victory over Luther, the latter delivering the team’s first NCAA Tournament triumph. In the NCAA Tournament, McCaskey went 6‑for‑13 with four runs and five stolen bases across three games, while McMurray’s three‑run homer helped seal the historic win.
Coach and Program Legacy
Head coach Matt Parrington guided the squad to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division III Championship, a milestone that reflects the growing prominence of Macalester baseball. The team’s success also earned recognition for the American Baseball Coaches Association and the college itself, both of which were highlighted in the All‑Region honors.
