A New Chapter for Salem Spartans
After 19 seasons at the helm of Salem High School’s basketball program, veteran coach Kevin Garst announced his retirement, closing a chapter that saw him guide the Spartans to a state title both as a player and later as a coach, amassing 263 career wins.
He will remain at the school teaching business courses, expressing confidence in the program’s future and gratitude for the community that supported him.
Stepping into the role is Adam Rutledge, a former Spartans starter on the 1999 championship team, who spent the past three years coaching the Andrew Lewis Middle School squad and also serves as a respected music teacher and live performer in the region.
Rutledge’s basketball pedigree runs deep; he averaged nearly 20 points per game during the 1999 state tournament run and was mentored by longtime Salem coach Charlie Morgan, the same figure who shaped Garst’s early career.
The varsity team he inherits comes off a 19‑win season, a foundation that Rutledge hopes to build upon while also bringing his dual passion for sports and music to the locker room and beyond.
A graduate of Roanoke College with a business administration degree, Rutledge combines analytical acumen with creative energy, positioning him as a unique leader for the program.
