Gabe Lazo Leads UCF Women’s Basketball into a Revamped Season

A historic first Latino head coach and a slate of impactful transfers set the stage for a competitive campaign

UCF’s women’s basketball program has entered a new chapter with the appointment of Gabe Lazo as head coach, marking the first time a Latino leader will guide a Power Four program at the highest level of collegiate competition. Lazo’s hiring brings a fresh perspective and a clear vision for the program’s future.

A Blend of Heritage and Talent

Lazo arrived with a mandate to combine the experience of three returning starters — Mahogany Chandler‑Roberts, Jasmynne Gibson and Felicia Schölander — with a wave of seven transfers who bring a mix of scoring, playmaking and defensive presence.

Among the newcomers, guard Mikayla Johnson, the leading scorer from Pittsburgh, joins a group that also features guard Key Roseby, a Southland Conference first‑team selection from Stephen F. Austin, and guard Caitlyn Jones, who ranked fourth among ACC freshmen in assists last season.

Forward Vittoria Blasigh, the 2024 American Conference Freshman of the Year from Miami, adds depth, while center Candace Kpetikou, known for her 33 career blocks, anchors the paint. Guard/forward Nyla McFadden, a two‑time state champion from Penn State, and guard/forward Jennica Suggs, younger sister of NBA guard Jalen Suggs, bring versatility and a winning pedigree from Robert Morris.

Lazo’s strategy emphasizes a fast‑paced offense, disciplined defense and a culture of accountability, aiming to translate the diverse skill sets into a cohesive unit that can compete in the American Athletic Conference.
