A storied rivalry resurfaces
Oregon State University and the University of Oregon have confirmed that their historic football rivalry, known as the Civil War, will resume in 2028 after a two‑year hiatus, marking the first such gap since the series began in 1894.
The agreement guarantees four future matchups, slated for September 16, 2028, September 11, 2032, September 15, 2029 and August 30, 2031, spread across the Pacific Northwest and the Willamette Valley.
The decision comes at a pivotal moment for both programs. Oregon’s recent move to the Big Ten Conference and Oregon State’s transition back into the Pac‑12 have raised questions about scheduling, but the schools have pledged to preserve the tradition that defines much of their athletic identity.
The rivalry, contested 129 times to date, stands as college football’s second‑most‑played series at the Football Bowl Subdivision level. Oregon leads the all‑time series 69‑51‑10, and the Ducks have captured seven of the last ten meetings, including a 41‑7 victory in 2025.
Fans across the region have greeted the announcement with a mix of nostalgia and anticipation, eager to see how the renewed competition will unfold against the backdrop of conference realignment and evolving recruiting landscapes.
