Nicole Woods, the head coach of the University of North Carolina Wilmington women's basketball team, found herself in an unexpected battle against the Atlantic surf last weekend.
The Moment the Current Took Hold
The incident unfolded at Wrightsville Beach, a popular coastal spot near Wilmington, where Woods and her extended family had gathered for a routine outing.
According to Woods, her 8‑year‑old nephew was caught in a rip current, panicked, and began flailing, prompting her to sprint into the water to rescue him.
What followed was a minutes‑long struggle as the current dragged both Woods and her nephew under, leaving them exhausted and unable to surface.
Rescue crews eventually pulled the pair from the ocean; Woods was unresponsive, without a pulse, and required immediate CPR and defibrillation before being stabilized.
She was airlifted to Novant New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where doctors placed her on a ventilator in the intensive care unit. Miraculously, she awoke days later with no cognitive deficits.
Now back on her feet, Woods is using her platform to warn beachgoers about the hidden danger of rip currents, urging swimmers to heed posted signs and learn basic water safety.
UNCW Athletics issued a statement expressing their thoughts and support for Nicole and her family as she focuses on her recovery.
