Flint Style Soccer Celebrates 10 Years of Free Youth Soccer in Flint

Founded by local natives Steve Wolbert and Enrique Vargas, the program now engages over 1,600 children, offering free soccer for grades 1‑8.

Flint Style Soccer gathered at the Mott Park Clubhouse in Flint to mark its tenth anniversary, bringing together players, families, and community leaders for a celebration of a decade of sport.

A Decade of Community Impact

The program was launched in 2016 by two Flint natives, Steve Wolbert and Enrique Vargas, who envisioned a free soccer pathway for the city’s youth.

Since then, the initiative has expanded into one of the nation’s largest free youth soccer programs, drawing more than 1,600 participants from across the region.

Its model — completely free registration and equipment for students in grades one through eight — removes the economic hurdles that often keep children off the field.

Parent Dan Kusky, whose children have taken part in the league, praised the effort, saying it not only provides quality activities but also strengthens neighborhood bonds.

Organizers say the milestone underscores the power of community‑driven sport to unite neighborhoods and give every child a chance to play.
