A Rain‑Soaked Soccer Clinic
The clinic featured a series of skill‑building drills and coaching sessions led by professional instructors, with South Texas Youth Soccer Association coach Luis Mara emphasizing that enjoyment and development are the twin pillars of growing the sport. Mara highlighted how the indoor setting allowed the youngsters to focus on technique while still feeling the excitement of a live clinic.
Among the participants was third‑grader Edison Robles, an avid soccer fan who revealed his admiration for Argentine star Lionel Messi. Robles’ enthusiasm exemplified the clinic’s broader goal of connecting local youth with global soccer icons while providing hands‑on instruction from experienced coaches.
The initiative is supported by a coalition that includes the FIFA World Cup 2026 Houston Host Committee, the City of Houston, Harris County Precincts 1‑4, and local youth soccer groups. In addition, commercial partners such as Houston Dynamo FC, Houston Dash, and Aramco are contributing resources and expertise, underscoring a multi‑stakeholder commitment to expanding access to the game.
Beyond the single clinic, the “Grow the Game” effort plans to construct or refurbish 23 soccer pitches across six Houston‑area parks, two of which are located in Aldine—Alabonson Park and Keith‑Wiess Park. This long‑term investment seeks to remove barriers to participation and ensure that more children can experience the unifying power of soccer.
