Jason Moore, who stepped down after a single season at Fayetteville Christian, has turned his vision into reality with the launch of Cumberland Prep Academy, an independent basketball program based in Cumberland County.
A flexible model for student‑athletes
The academy does not function as a traditional school; instead, it operates as a basketball collective that allows participants to remain enrolled at their home institutions while competing for Cumberland Prep. This arrangement grants Moore full creative control over the team's direction and enables him to recruit talent from across the county.
Moore says the program was born out of a desire to reach more youngsters and to design a development pathway that prioritizes player growth over institutional constraints. He has already scheduled 18 games for the upcoming season, with plans to expand the slate to 35‑40 contests by next fall.
The initiative has not been without controversy. Several traditional schools have voiced resistance to the model, citing concerns about competitive balance and the precedent it sets. Nevertheless, Moore remains focused on his mission: to provide a platform that helps athletes showcase their abilities and earn opportunities at the collegiate level.
