Greenport Village Board Eyes $25,000 Basketball Court Upgrade

Residents propose new amenities and community‑focused features, sparking both enthusiasm and neighbor concerns.

The Greenport Village Board is weighing a $25,000 proposal to upgrade the basketball courts on Third Street, a project initiated by residents Tod Hart and Collin Ratsey.

Community Vision and Funding

The plan calls for larger polycarbonate backboards, collapsible rims, heavy‑duty nets and protective pads on the poles, as well as an eight‑foot hoop designed for younger children. In addition, the renovation would paint a hopscotch and four‑square area, install a cornhole zone and add a soccer net, while nearly 40 trees donated by the Greenport Tree Committee would line the perimeter.

Funding for the entire undertaking would come from the friends and family of Hart and Ratsey, eliminating any cost to the village.

Local high school students have long cherished the courts; senior Faith Welch recalls the annual NoFo Kid Connect basketball tournament, and her brother Noah Welch, a sophomore on the varsity team, says the facilities have helped shape him both as a player and as a person.

Board Deliberations and Concerns

Deputy Mayor Patrick Brennan voiced worries that the new amenities could increase noise levels and place additional maintenance burdens on neighbors. Trustee Mary Bess Phillips reminded the board of the village’s responsibility to upkeep the courts after the improvements are completed.

Trustee Lily Dougherty‑Johnson suggested that the work might be carried out in two phases to manage scope and budget.

Future Plans and Community Impact

The board appears receptive to the idea, with the added vision of creating a multi‑use space that welcomes residents of all ages and interests. By integrating recreational zones and green planting, the project aims to strengthen community ties and provide a safe, inclusive gathering spot.

If approved, the upgrades would build on recent investments, including a $19,200 resurfacing completed last August and a $4,750 repair after a storm‑downed tree damaged a fence last month.
