Why This Commitment Matters
Four-star safety prospect KJ Caldwell announced his commitment to North Carolina State on Thursday, selecting the Wolfpack over a final slate that included the Georgia Bulldogs, Kansas State Wildcats and Mississippi State Rebels.
Caldwell, listed as the No. 5 safety in the 2027 class and the 82nd overall prospect nationally, also held the No. 7 spot among Georgia’s top recruits, making his decision a rare instance of a top‑10 Georgia player choosing a school outside the SEC.
The pledge comes at a time when Georgia’s 2027 recruiting haul has been hit by a series of defections. Just last week the Bulldogs lost commitments from Donte Wright and Aden Starling, two players who had been projected as core pieces of the class.
NC State’s ability to secure a recruit of Caldwell’s caliber is being celebrated as a major win for the program. The Wolfpack now sit at No. 24 in the national team rankings with 11 pledges, a jump that underscores the growing competitiveness of the Atlantic Coast Conference program.
Coach Kirby Smart and the Georgia staff will hope to rebound quickly, but the early attrition highlights the volatility of the modern recruiting landscape, where even five‑star prospects can shift allegiance before signing day.
