Summer Preparations
Iowa State’s basketball program will open summer workouts on June 15, a date that marks the first step toward the 2026‑27 season. The Cyclones are coming off a 29‑8 record that featured a Sweet 16 run, and the early practices are already being used to fine‑tune conditioning and install new concepts.
Coach T.J. Otzelberger has emphasized that the team’s foundation rests on a core group of returners who have already proven their ability to compete at a high level. Their experience, combined with a willingness to adapt, sets the tone for the work ahead.
Veteran Leaders
Jamarion Batemon enters the offseason with a clear set of goals. Last year he averaged 6.6 points and 1.2 rebounds while shooting 38.8% from the field. Otzelberger expects Batemon to sharpen his ball‑handling and increase his rebounding presence, positioning him as a more reliable playmaker.
Blake Buchanan brings a blend of size and efficiency, having posted 8.5 points and 5.7 rebounds while shooting a career‑high 63.6% from the field. The coach has highlighted Buchanan’s defensive instincts and his developing floater as key assets that could swing games in the Cyclones’ favor.
Xzavion Mitchell’s growth was one of the most talked‑about storylines last season. After adding 25 pounds of muscle, he is now expected to take on a larger role in both scoring and defense, leveraging his improved physicality to dominate inside the paint.
Dominykas Pleta’s 70.6% field‑goal percentage last year reflects his efficiency around the rim. Otzelberger believes Pleta can further refine his defensive instincts and finishing ability, making him a steadying force in the frontcourt.
Killyan Toure’s 8.6 points and 3.5 rebounds per game were complemented by a 46% shooting clip. The coaching staff anticipates that Toure will assume a more prominent playmaking role and become a consistent threat from beyond the arc.
New Faces and Coaching Additions
The roster will welcome three incoming freshmen and five transfer players, adding depth and fresh talent to the mix. Alongside them, two new assistant coaches — Tim Buckley and Allan Hanson — will join the staff, bringing additional expertise and energy to daily practices.
Returning veterans such as Joshua Jefferson, Tamin Lipsey, Milan Momcilovic and Pete Link will play a crucial part in helping the newcomers adjust to life in Ames. Their familiarity with the program’s culture and expectations should smooth the transition for the fresh talent.
Overall, the Cyclones are shaping a season that could hinge on how quickly the new pieces mesh with the established core. With a strong work ethic, defensive focus and continued offensive development, Iowa State aims to translate its recent success into an even more ambitious campaign.
