Justin Gainey Prepares NC State Men’s Basketball for a New Season

Returning sharpshooter Paul McNeil Jr. and a revamped roster aim to blend character with competitiveness.

Justin Gainey, a former Wolfpack player turned head coach, has taken the reins of NC State’s men’s basketball program with a clear mission: to blend high‑character leadership with a competitive edge.

The centerpiece of his early roster construction is the return of sharpshooter Paul McNeil Jr., who averaged 13.8 points last season and shot 42.7% from three‑point range. McNeil turned down more lucrative offers to stay in Raleigh, underscoring his commitment to the program.

Gainey has also added six transfers and is actively seeking additional depth, aiming to field at least four players capable of consistent three‑point shooting. He stresses that the team’s offense will revolve around that spacing and precision.

Building a Culture of Respect

Speaking about the broader vision, Gainey says the program must attract players who respect the NC State brand and understand what it means to win. He believes that character and competence are inseparable in building a sustainable winner.

Athletics director Boo Corrigan has voiced full confidence in Gainey, citing the coach’s deep ties to the university and his ability to leverage existing resources and culture.

The upcoming season will mark one of five new head coaching tenures in the ACC, placing Gainey among a cohort of fresh strategic directions across the conference.

With a blend of returning talent, strategic transfers, and a focus on shooting, the Wolfpack hope to translate their renewed identity into on‑court success while upholding the values that define NC State basketball.
