A 44‑year‑old woman from Newberry Township, Pennsylvania, was arrested this week after police say she brandished a small pocket knife during a confrontation at a local community basketball court.
Nicole Lee Rodriguez, 44, approached another woman aggressively, brandishing the weapon during an altercation that also involved her 16‑year‑old son and several other teenagers, according to a statement from the Newberry Township Police Department.
Rodriguez now faces two misdemeanor counts of simple assault, as well as separate misdemeanor charges for possession of a weapon, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct, court records show.
Police response and community impact
Acting Newberry Township Police Chief Braxton Ditty said the conduct displayed during the incident is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. In response, the department has increased patrols in the Valley Green Village area and has begun spending time engaging with young people, even joining them on the basketball court to foster dialogue.
The basketball courts where the altercation occurred have been closed pending further investigation, and authorities have indicated that additional charges are likely against other participants who may have been involved in the disturbance.
Officials emphasized a zero‑tolerance approach to violence, stating that anyone who chooses to engage in criminal activity in Newberry Township should expect to be investigated, identified, arrested and prosecuted when appropriate.
