The Billinghurst Middle School boys basketball team capped an unbeaten campaign in its inaugural season, a feat that has turned heads across the Reno‑Tahoe region and showcased the promise of its sixth‑grade players.
The Making of an Undefeated Season
Coach Junior Minters, who also works as a counselor at the school, attributes the squad’s cohesion to a regimen of discipline and structure, qualities he says are essential for young athletes learning to balance sport and academics.
Minters, a recent Reno transplant with five years in the city, notes that the revival of the sixth‑grade league — last seen more than three decades ago — was driven by a desire to keep students engaged and rooted in their education.
Looking ahead, he plans to shepherd the same group through their middle‑school years and, if circumstances allow, continue guiding them at the nearby McQueen High School, where most of the players will eventually enroll.
Beyond the scoreboard, the team’s success underscores a broader narrative: middle‑school sports can be a powerful catalyst for confidence, character development, and long‑term personal growth.
