Mark DeLaney Named Head Coach of Spring Arbor Cougars

Veteran coach with nearly two decades of experience joins the university to lead a faith‑driven program

Spring Arbor University announced Monday that Mark DeLaney will assume the role of head coach for the Cougars men’s basketball team, with his official start date set for June 1, 2026.

DeLaney arrives after nearly twenty years of coaching across NCAA Division II, NAIA and high school programs, where he has built a reputation for developing talent both on the court and in the classroom.

A Commitment to Faith and Competition

President Brent Ellis praised DeLaney’s blend of spiritual guidance and competitive drive, stating that the new coach embodies the university’s mission to nurture student‑athletes in body, mind and spirit.

Interim Athletic Director Ryan Marken echoed the sentiment, highlighting DeLaney’s proven record of player development and his ability to attract top talent within the region.

During his tenure at Ashland University, DeLaney helped the Eagles post a 20‑11 record and earn a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament, while also contributing to the recruitment of Ohio’s No. 1 Division II class.

His coaching journey also includes stints at Grace College, Northern State University and Cedarville University, where he assisted in guiding the Wolves to a 29‑4 season and a regional final appearance.

Before moving into the college ranks, DeLaney spent a decade leading high school teams, collecting district coach of the year honors twice and shaping young athletes through a Christ‑centered approach.

Reflecting on his new role, DeLaney emphasized that his mission extends beyond wins and losses: he aims to develop each player spiritually, academically and athletically, preparing them for life beyond the game.

Looking Ahead

The Cougars’ fan base can look forward to a program that blends rigorous competition with a steadfast commitment to faith, as the university seeks to build on its recent successes under new leadership.
