Hardaway Eyes Offensive Revival with Memphis Tigers

Coach anticipates chemistry breakthrough as roster nears completion

Penny Hardaway, the Memphis basketball coach, arrived at the offseason with a clear vision: transform a unit that ranked 207th in adjusted offensive efficiency last year into a threat that can score from multiple positions. He described his current satisfaction as markedly higher than it was a summer ago, when the roster remained unsettled.

Building a Complete Roster

This year the staff moved quickly, filling 14 of the 15 available scholarships before the market closed. The additions include a mix of Division I transfers and freshmen, among them FAU big man Maxim Logue, who became the most recent piece of the puzzle. Hardaway emphasized that the entire squad will be on campus for summer workouts in early June, a period he sees as critical for forging on‑court chemistry.

The coach’s strategy hinges on 5‑on‑5 play to accelerate that chemistry. By running full‑court scrimmages, he hopes players will develop a shared understanding of spacing, timing and defensive rotations. Hardaway also stressed the need for multiple scoring options, arguing that a diversified offensive attack will prevent opponents from locking onto a single star.

Key Offensive Weapons

Among the players expected to shoulder scoring duties are Tylik Weeks and Brandin Cummings. Weeks, who topped the Sun Belt with 19.7 points per game, brings a proven knack for finding the basket. Cummings, formerly Pitt’s leading scorer with 12.5 points per game before a season‑ending injury, adds a complementary threat. Both are slated to lead a group that includes transfers such as Jayden Reid, Josh Holloway, Luke Almodovar, Rihards Vavers, Jerry Deng, Fred Smith Jr., Cello Jackson Jr., Parker Pounds, Julius Thedford and others who arrived this offseason.

Hardaway’s optimism extends beyond individual talent. He pointed to the experience of veterans like PJ Haggerty and Dain Dainja, whose decisions a year ago had delayed roster construction. This time, the coach said, the team is moving forward with a clear plan, and the chemistry cultivated during June and July could translate into a markedly improved performance when the season begins.
