Max Weir has been named the new head baseball coach at the University of Massachusetts, taking over the program after a successful stint as co‑head coach alongside Brandon Shileikis during the 2025‑26 season.
Weir returned to the Minutemen after serving as a volunteer assistant in 2022‑23, a role in which he worked closely with catchers and hitters, and later as associate head coach at Nichols College where he helped develop two All‑Americans and the CCC Player of the Year.
A look at Weir's coaching pedigree
Under his guidance the team posted a strong second half of the 2026 season, finishing with an 11‑7 record in the final six conference series and staying in contention for one of the six spots in the Mid‑American Conference Tournament until the last weekend of play.
The impact of his leadership was evident in the individual accolades earned by his players, with junior pitcher Callen Powers earning All‑MAC Second Team honors after a 3.96 ERA in conference play, and the Minutemen sweeping the MAC weekly awards on April 13, where Adam Merritt was named Pitcher of the Week and Gavin O’Brien earned Player of the Week.
Weir's coaching journey also includes stints at Gardner‑Webb University and American International College, as well as a previous season with the Boston Red Sox organization, giving him a diverse background that he now brings to the Minutemen.
