The Race for 2027 Talent
Michigan State University kicked off its first official visit weekend for the 2027 football class this past weekend, turning the campus into a hub of anticipation as the coaching staff rolled out the red carpet for a dozen of the nation’s most coveted prospects.
Among them, four‑star tight end Anthony Cartwright from Detroit Country Day drew particular attention. The Detroit native, whose recruitment has stretched across the country, listed Oregon and LSU among his top considerations before arriving in East Lansing. His presence underscored the Spartans’ push to close a class that could reshape the offensive line for years to come.
Defensive end Reinaldo Perez, a four‑star recruit from Columbus Academy, also made the trip, weighing Indiana, Ohio State and Michigan alongside the Spartans. Meanwhile, offensive lineman Caleb Johnson traveled from Indiana, where he is being courted by a trio of powerhouses — Indiana, Iowa and Auburn — while eyeing a future in East Lansing.
The weekend also welcomed wide receiver Isaiah Alvarez from New Jersey, safety Don Spillers from Detroit King, and fellow defensive backs Henry Sakalas of Illinois and Kayden Battle of Georgia. Each brought a different set of suitors, from Illinois and Louisville to Pittsburgh, adding layers of intrigue to the evolving narratives.
Linebacker Matthew Brady, another Illinois prospect, and Franklin Ibelo, a defensive tackle transfer from the University of Calgary, rounded out the visitor list. Their visits come at a time when Michigan State is navigating a crowded recruiting landscape that includes fierce competition from Oregon, LSU, Michigan, Indiana and a host of other traditional contenders.
Coaches and analysts alike note that these official visits serve as more than just tours; they are strategic moments for the Spartans to cement relationships, showcase their facilities, and signal a clear intent to compete at the highest level. As commitments begin to crystallize, the outcomes of these weekends could reverberate through the next recruiting cycle.
