South Carolina Women's Basketball Eyes Larger Roster for 2026-27
Coach Dawn Staley announced that the Gamecocks will field a full complement of 15 players next season, a size not seen since the 2021-22 campaign when a one‑season waiver allowed 16 athletes to suit up.
Staley, who typically works with 12‑13 scholarship athletes, said the extra bodies bring both opportunity and challenge, especially in practice distribution and minutes allocation.
The 2021‑22 team, bolstered by the waiver, captured a national championship, proving that size does not automatically translate into success but can be harnessed with the right approach.
Central to Staley’s philosophy is the clear definition of each player’s role. She emphasizes that a player’s impact is maximized when she concentrates on what she does best, even if that means not starting the five most talented athletes on the floor.
Victaria Saxton exemplified this mindset; after grasping her responsibilities, she earned a three‑year starting spot and became a cornerstone of the lineup.
In the 2022 Final Four, Staley leveraged matchups to counter opponents’ strengths, inserting Saniya Rivers to provide size against Louisville’s small guards, a tactical decision that paid dividends.
The coaching staff and the players are already collaborating to identify and articulate those roles, ensuring that every newcomer understands where she fits within the team’s ecosystem.
With a roster that includes returning stars such as Aliyah Boston, Chloe Kitts, Tessa Johnson, Joyce Edwards, Jordan Lee, LeLe Grissett, Raven Johnson, Ashlyn Watkins, Kaeli Wynn, Kelsi Andrews, Destanni Henderson, Zia Cooke, Kamilla Cardoso and the newly added players, the Gamecocks aim to blend experience with fresh talent while adhering to Staley’s developmental model.
A Strategic Approach to Player Development
Staley’s strategy hinges on maximizing the strengths of each athlete, a method that has produced consistent success at the collegiate level. By assigning distinct responsibilities, the staff can tailor practice reps and game minutes to foster growth without overburdening any single player.
The upcoming season will test how effectively the larger group can be integrated, but the coach remains confident that the blend of veteran leadership and emerging contributors will keep the Gamecocks competitive in the SEC and beyond.
