Chatfield's baseball program, long viewed as a modest contender in the 5A classification, captured statewide attention this spring with a postseason run that exceeded every preseason projection.
The Underdog Seed
Entering the tournament as the No. 27 seed, the team shocked observers by first dispatching No. 6 Brighton and then toppling No. 11 Fort Collins, a pair of victories that propelled them into the state tournament for the first time since 2021.
First‑year head coach Shane Horan, who arrived with a fresh staff, emphasized discipline and aggressive base running. Among his trusted assistants was veteran coach Jack McLaughlin, whose background in the Jeffco League helped shape the team's defensive identity.
Key Moments and Standout Performers
The turning point came in a tight contest against Fairview. Sophomore Brady Harman delivered a 2‑run triple in the seventh inning, turning a 1‑1 deadlock into a 2‑1 lead. Junior pitcher Evan Novotny then sealed the win, striking out 13 batters while allowing just two hits, and junior Keir Traurig closed the game with a save.
Novotny’s dominance extended beyond that game; he and his fellow arms — Brody Logan, Michael Kneuer, and the rest of the junior‑laden staff — logged more than 136 innings on the mound throughout the season, a workload that underscored the team’s reliance on youthful talent.
The momentum carried into the next round, where Chatfield faced Jeffco rival Arvada West in the state opener. After an initial setback, the squad rallied to defeat Fairview the following day, showcasing resilience that defined their tournament experience.
The End of a Run and the Start of Something New
The adventure concluded with a loss to Legend, ending the season but leaving a wealth of experience for a roster dominated by juniors and sophomores. Coach Horan expressed optimism that the team could break into the top‑10 rankings next year and return to the final eight.
Beyond the wins and losses, the campaign highlighted the power of a cohesive coaching staff, a pitching rotation that over‑performed relative to its seeding, and a community eager to support its young athletes.
