A Freshman's International Debut
Quentin Coleman, a standout freshman guard from Illinois, has been named to the 12‑player roster that will wear the red, white and blue at the FIBA U18 AmeriCup in Leon, Mexico. The selection follows a rigorous training camp held in Colorado Springs, where the USA Basketball Men's Junior National Team Committee evaluated the nation's most promising under‑18 talent.
Coleman will be joined by a mix of rising stars, including Bruce Branch III, Caleb Gaskins and Jasiah Jervis, all of whom bring a blend of size, skill and experience. The team is guided by head coach Anthony Grant, with assistants Matt Langel and Nate Oats, both of whom have deep roots in collegiate basketball development.
The tournament schedule begins on June 1 with a highly anticipated opening matchup against Argentina at 7:30 p.m. ET. Victors from each group advance to the semifinals on June 6, and the championship and medal games will be played on June 7, offering the young athletes a chance to contend for podium finishes against international competition.
Coleman's inclusion is the latest chapter in Illinois' proud tradition of producing USA Basketball talent under head coach Brad Underwood. He becomes the fourth Illini from the Underwood era to earn a spot on the U18 national team, following in the footsteps of recent gold‑medalists Ayo Dosunmu, Ty Rodgers and Morez Johnson Jr.
Beyond his collegiate promise, Coleman has already garnered national recognition, earning MaxPreps First Team All‑American honors and being named MVP at the Iverson Classic with a 31‑point, 12‑rebound performance. He was also a finalist at the 2018 USA Men's U17 World Cup trials and ranked No. 13 overall in the 247 Sports Class of 2026 rankings.
The upcoming competition will serve as a showcase for Coleman and his teammates to test themselves against some of the best young players from across the Americas. For Illinois, the exposure reinforces the program's reputation for attracting top talent from both domestic and international pipelines.
