FIU's men's basketball team has announced the addition of Jaylin Payne, a 6‑foot‑8 forward who spent the previous season under head coach Joey Cantens at DSC. Payne's arrival marks a strategic move to reinforce the Panthers' frontcourt with size, versatility, and proven performance against ranked opponents.
Payne's College Trail
Payne began his collegiate career at Blinn College during the 2023‑24 season before transferring to Longwood University, where he appeared in 29 games and averaged 1.8 points and 1.7 rebounds per contest. A lone start against Maine on Nov. 29 saw him score six points, and a season‑high eight rebounds came against Averett on Dec. 28.
At DSC, Payne blossomed into a more impactful player, averaging 9.3 points and 5.9 rebounds over 32 appearances. He recorded 12 double‑figure scoring efforts and two double‑doubles, highlighted by a 22‑point, 11‑rebound performance against No. 15 Tallahassee State on Nov. 27 and a 22‑point outing versus No. 25 Monroe on Dec. 16.
What This Means for FIU
Coach Joey Cantens expressed confidence that Payne's size and experience will bolster the Panthers' depth as they aim for a competitive season. The coaching staff believes his background against high‑ranked teams will translate into immediate contributions on both ends of the floor.
A native of Greenbelt, Maryland, near Washington, D.C., Payne will join a roster that includes returning players and fresh recruits, adding a new dimension to FIU's offensive schemes and defensive presence.
