Ryder Fetterolf, an 18‑year‑old goaltender from Sewickley, Pennsylvania, arrived in Blaine, Minnesota, eager to test himself against some of the nation’s most promising net‑minders.
From May 18 to May 21, the National Goaltending Development Camp gathered 25 young goalies alongside a dozen defenders on the women’s side, creating a compact but intense training environment.
Mental Mastery and On‑Ice Growth
Under the guidance of USA Hockey’s David Lassonde and New York Rangers mental‑skills coach Julia Allain, participants explored the psychological demands of elite hockey, learning techniques to sharpen focus, manage pressure and maintain confidence during high‑stakes moments.
The curriculum blended on‑ice drills with video analysis, team‑building exercises and off‑ice workshops led by Alli Altmann, the U.S. Women’s National Team goaltending coach, who emphasized nutrition, sleep and recovery as pillars of performance.
Fetterolf, who spent the previous season with the Ottawa 67s of the Ontario Hockey League, highlighted the value of wearing the USA jersey and learning from top coaches and elite athletes, describing the experience as a pivotal step toward his international ambitions.
Among the camp’s standout figures were Olympic gold medalist Ava McNaughton, collegiate standouts Layla Hemp, Hailey Hansen and Annelies Bergmann, as well as NTDP prospects Luke Carrithers, Nate Chizik, Brady Knowling and Eli Winters, each contributing to a vibrant exchange of ideas and techniques.
The camp’s impact extends beyond the rink, offering participants a glimpse of the pathways that lead from junior leagues to national teams, while reinforcing the importance of holistic development in modern hockey.
