A New Chapter for Kimball Basketball
Gerald Smith, a celebrated coach who led Madison to a state championship, has been appointed the new head coach of the Kimball boys basketball program, taking over from his brother Nicke Smith, who recently accepted a similar role at DeSoto.
The hiring marks a strategic move for Kimball, a school that boasts the second‑most boys basketball state titles in UIL history with nine championships, and the administration hopes the new leadership will help the team tie the record held by Snook next season.
Stephanie Elizalde, the district’s athletic director, emphasized that the vacancy at Madison has created a high‑profile opening in the Dallas area, underscoring the growing competitiveness of coaching openings across the region.
Dallas Independent School District, which oversees both Kimball and Madison, will support the transition as the program looks to maintain its tradition of excellence while navigating the shifting landscape of high school athletics.
