Scott Pionk Named Head Coach of Superior High School Boys Hockey

Veteran coach brings four decades of experience and a strong community focus to the Spartans

A New Era for Spartan Hockey

Scott Pionk has been appointed the new head coach of the Superior High School boys hockey program, taking over from longtime leader Rob Downs.

Pionk arrives with more than four decades of coaching experience across the NAHL, USHL and collegiate levels, having previously guided the Waterloo Black Hawks as head coach and general manager, served as an assistant with the Omaha Lancers, and worked with the Minnesota Wilderness during the 2021‑22 season.

Beyond his coaching résumé, he owns and operates Northeast 218 Hockey Camps, a popular summer program that draws talent from across the region, and he previously held the dual role of head coach and general manager for the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks from 1997 to 1999.

In a statement, Pionk said it was an honor to be named the next head coach and that he looks forward to working with the Spartans, emphasizing his commitment to student‑athletes and their families.

Superior High School Principal Ryan Haroldson praised the hire, calling it a massive win for the program and noting that Pionk’s blend of experience and community ties should elevate the team’s competitiveness.

The Spartans are scheduled to open practice on November 9, with the first home game slated against Hayward later in the season, marking the start of a new chapter for the program.
