Section 1-4A Tournament: Mayo Stuns Top Seed
Mayo’s baseball squad, seeded fifth, pulled off a decisive 5‑1 victory over top‑seeded Farmington in the Section 1, Class 4A tournament on Wednesday. The win showcased a balanced attack and a pitching performance that left the opposition limited to a single run.
Kyle Leopold, the Spartans’ ace, worked all seven innings, allowing just three hits, one earned run and a walk while striking out seven batters. Farmington managed to plate its lone run in the bottom of the first inning on a one‑out double to left center, but Mayo’s defense held firm the rest of the game.
Mayo’s offense got early momentum when Colton Brandt doubled in the third inning and later scored on a two‑out strikeout. Mason Hinchley finished with two hits, a run scored and two stolen bases, contributing to the team’s steady rally.
The Spartans will now meet third‑seeded New Prague in the semifinal scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday at Dundas Memorial Park. New Prague secured its spot by edging Lakeville North 11‑7 on Wednesday, setting up a compelling matchup for the Spartans.
In the elimination bracket, Owatonna dispatched John Marshall 8‑2, with Dylan Endle launching a home run and driving in two runs. Jace Ulrich contributed three RBIs and A.J. Ulrich fanned eight batters over seven innings, helping the team advance.
John Marshall closed the season with a 4‑21 record, concluding a challenging campaign for the squad.
