Sectional Showdown Looms
The championship match of the Litchfield Class 1A Sectional soccer tournament is set to pit two of the region’s most dominant programs against each other. Marquette and Litchfield will meet on Litchfield’s natural grass field, a surface that has become increasingly scarce as many districts shift to artificial turf.
Beyond bragging rights, the victor will earn a berth in the Bethalto Class 1A Super‑Sectional, the next step on the path toward the state title. Both squads arrive with impressive credentials: Litchfield has dropped only a single defeat this season, a loss to Marquette on March 30 at Glazebrook Park, while Marquette rides a 12‑game unbeaten streak that includes a tie with Waterloo Gibault in the regular‑season finale.
Litchfield’s offense has been prolific, tallying 155 goals while conceding just ten in 26 contests. The team’s quick, creative forwards and midfielders thrive on the home pitch, with senior Chloe Law leading the attack with 49 goals and 33 assists, and McKenna Harmon contributing 25 goals and 21 assists. Goalie Lynzie Reid has also anchored a defense that has recorded 15 shutouts this year.
Marquette, meanwhile, has posted 77 goals and relies on a balanced attack anchored by Alex Stephan, who has 17 goals and 13 assists, and Izzi Hough, who adds 13 goals and 17 assists. Goalie Jessica Eales has kept 14 clean sheets, supporting a defense that has been equally disciplined.
The stakes are reflected in the latest MaxPreps Cass 1A State Rankings, where Marquette sits at No. 4 and Litchfield at No. 7. Father McGivney holds the top spot, while Belleville Althoff and Columbia are positioned just ahead of Litchfield.
Coach Brian Hoener of Marquette has acknowledged the challenge, stating that Litchfield is a very good team and that his side must be at its best to secure a result.
As the teams prepare to clash on a dwindling natural surface, the match promises to showcase the tactical nuance and athletic brilliance that have defined their seasons, making it a must‑watch event for soccer enthusiasts across the region.
